Boyd discusses military technology on Curious by Nature

Iain Boyd was interviewed on hypersonic weapons, drones, and artificial intelligence in a new Curious By Nature podcast.Ìý
Boyd, a professor in the Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences, is an expert on hypersonic vehicles and the director of the ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Center for National Security Initiatives.Ìý
Iran has used missiles that can travel at hypersonic speeds in the ongoing war. They have also been utilized by Russia in their war against Ukraine. They are uniquely difficult to defend against because of their speed and maneuverability compared to ballistic missiles that have been a part of military arsenals for decades.
"You have less time to react. These vehicles also fly in a part of the atmosphere where nothing else flies. Most armies don't have radars and tracking devices looking at that part of the sky. These new hypersonic vehicles maneuver all the way through their trajectory, which means you have to track them all the time," Boyd said.
