The Next Big Thing In Business Education

Aerial view of campus

The future of business belongs to people who can bridge worlds. Today’s leaders must be as comfortable discussing artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing and climate resilience as they are analyzing financial statements, building strategy or leading teams. The challenges facing organizations no longer fit neatly into one discipline—and neither should a business education.

Recognizing this shift, the Leeds School of Business is reimagining what a business degree should be. New undergraduate and graduate programs unite business with engineering, sustainability, analytics, and emerging technologies, giving students the interdisciplinary knowledge and practical experience to thrive in an economy defined by constant innovation.

Whether developing products that move from lab to market, helping organizations navigate the transition to a more sustainable future, or translating complex technical ideas into business value, tomor- row’s graduates will need to think across disciplines as naturally as they think about business itself.

Together, the following programs reflect a bold new vision for business education, one that prepares the next generation of business leaders to thrive where disciplines converge.

MS in Sustainable Business

When Leeds introduced its Master of Science in Sustainable Business this fall, a powerful new model of cross-college collaboration was born, uniting expertise from business, engineering and the natural sciences to meet the surging global demand for leadership in sustainability.

The MS in Sustainable Business equips graduates with the analytical and leadership skills employers are seeking as organizations transition to a more sustainable economy. It prepares students to embed sustainability into every strategic decision, balancing technical excellence, ecological responsibility and economic resilience. The degree builds on Leeds’ values-based ethos and ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ’s well-earned reputation as a national leader in sustainability.

“The world is facing urgent sustainability challenges. Businesses are stepping up, and they need leaders who can bridge science, engineering and business to make real-world impact, David Drake, associate professor, faculty director of the MS in Sustainable Business program and Nicholas Dante Badami Faculty Fellow.

Integrated Business and Engineering Degree

Leeds teamed up with the College of Engineering and Applied Science to introduce the Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE) bachelor’s degree. The program gives undergraduates access to the combined strengths of ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ’s nationally recognized business and engineering programs to prepare them for dynamic careers in fi elds ranging from consulting and product development to energy, sustainability and advanced manufacturing.

“Within my industry, I consistently see technical minds who can’t articulate the business value of what they created or sharp business leaders who can’t hold their own in technical conversations, shared Kimi Coy, technology sales manager at IBM and Leeds Advisory Board member. “That is why I am so excited about the launch of the IBE program. This program builds that dual fluency from day one.

MS in Sustainable Business

The new MBA and MS in Sustainable Business (MSSB) dual degree blends the strengths of two programs into one integrated experience. Over the course of two years, students build the broad management toolkit of the MBA—developing leadership, strategy and critical thinking skills—while diving into the multifaceted MSSB, where coursework spans policy, science, engineering and business. The integrated curriculum helps students navigate the real-world complexities of sustainability to develop the analytical rigor and practical innovation needed to lead organizations toward more sustainable practices.

“Sustainability challenges require leaders who can bridge disciplines, said Kristi Ryujin, associate dean for Graduate Programs. “This dual degree allows students to build deep sustainability expertise while developing the strategic business skills needed to turn those ideas into action and long-term value.

BSBA in Sustainable Business

The BSBA Sustainable Business area of emphasis brings an interdisciplinary lens to one of business’ most urgent challenges: how to create value that lasts. Drawing connections across finance, marketing, operations and strategy, the program shows students how values- based decision-making and responsible governance can shape every corner of an organization.

Students don’t just study sustainable and ethical practices—they put them into action through hands-on projects, case competitions and real-world business scenarios. Along the way, coursework in leadership and governance builds their confidence and capability to lead change from within. The result is a new kind of business graduate: one who can think across disciplines, tackle complex problems, and turn purpose into practical, measurable impact.

“By bringing together perspectives from across disciplines and applying them, this program prepares students to lead with purpose and create impact beyond the bottom line, said Jennifer Bone, associate dean of undergraduate programs.
