[Journal] K-Pop Politics: Digital Mediation and Global Fandom

Deadline: November 2, 2012

The K-pop frenzy is anything but ordinary. On May 1 this year, some 300ÌýFrench fans holding Korean national flags gathered in front of the LouvreÌýMuseum, calling for additional K-pop concerts to be held in Paris. SimilarÌýrallies ensued in London’s Trafalgar Square, Poland’s Warsaw, andÌýColumbia’s Bolívar Square.ÌýThough on a continuum with Hallyu (the Korean Wave), K-Pop departs from theÌýearlier waves of Korean popular culture in its media specificity,Ìýgeographic scope and generational focus. Preceding currents of KoreanÌýpopular culture had centered on the cult of Korean television dramasÌýdistributed through conventional mass media (terrestrial, satellite, andÌýcable televisions) to neighboring countries such as Japan, China, Taiwan,ÌýVietnam, etc. The K-pop craze, however, is beyond “Asianâ€ bounds. This yearÌýalone, K-pop concerts were held in L.A., New York, Paris, London, Sydney,ÌýTokyo, etc., and K-Pop flash mobs continue to take place in suchÌýmetropolises as Singapore, Lima, Sao Paulo, Toronto, Jakarta, Vancouver,ÌýDublin, Bergen, and Rome.

[Journal] Special Issue on Constructing Interstitial ÌýHeritage: architectures, visions and experiences in the InternationalÌýJournal of Tourism Anthropology

Deadline: November 15, 2012

The International Journal of Tourism Anthropology (IJTA), a quarterlyÌýfrom Inderscience, is a refereed international journal that publishesÌýlatest and quality research on tourism anthropology. This specialÌýissue invites submissions that explore the past and present modesÌýthrough which alternate cultural heritage can be preserved andÌýencouraged. In particular, it focuses on the realm of the interstice:Ìýa space, opening, crevice etc, between things near together or betweenÌýthe component parts of a body. Interstitial heritage can be locatedÌýbetween entities as well as within them. By nature, it creates anÌýaperture that forms an alternate field and conduit to existentÌý

structures. It needs not to negate necessarily a prevailingÌýsocio-political and economic frame (though it may well do so), but itÌýultimately provides individuals and groups with a ground on which toÌýconstruct their environment and express themselves within it ratherÌýthan be subservient to it. In the city, for example, spontaneousÌýoccupations of grounds and temporary archisculptures have offeredÌýmodels of interstitial production. In the ever increasing flow ofÌýimages during the 20th century, visual strategies aiming to buildÌýalternate banks of visual data have grown inside and outside of theÌýconstraints of the society of spectacle. In the every day life of anÌýincreasingly global world, numerous attempts have been made to proposeÌýbehaviours and experiences that challenge the predicates of top-downÌýsocial fabrics.
