Arts, Culture, Media - Pop Culture
Culture and Art are BIG terms most often used to indicate something that is great, lasting, and monolithic. In this course, we’ll deconstruct this idea by focusing on the division between socalled high- and low-art and culture through an exploration of Popular Culture. From pop stars to cult movies and superheroes to social media, we’ll examine pop culture as an accessible, democratic force in the world. Along the way, our fundamental question will be how do we understand who we are as individuals and as Americans, and how are our values shaped as a result of our interaction with popular culture forms (images, comic books, films, video, TV, social media, etc.)?
