No Parental Information
For financial aid purposes, a student is considered a dependent of their parents and parent information is required on the FAFSA unless the student is:
- 24-years-old
- married
- serving on active duty in the US Armed Forces
- a veteran
- a parent with dependents
- an emancipated minor
- homeless
- assigned a legal guardian before the age of 18
Exceptions
If you have an unusual circumstance, you may appeal to be considered independently from your parents. Unusual circumstances typically involve a family situation that makes it difficult for you to get both of your parents’ information, such as an abusive family environment, abandonment or incarceration of a parent.
If your parents simply refuse to provide their information on the FAFSA, this is not a valid exception. In this case, you may request limited financial aid.

It may take around 4 to 6 weeks to review your appeal. The complexity of your circumstances and when you submit your appeal can impact response times.Ìý
ÌýWe cannot review appeals without both supporting documents, and failing to include them with your Statement of No Parental Information will further delay a decision.
We appreciate your patience and look forward to helping you however we can as soon as possible.
