We sent this email on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, to individuals who had financial activity on their account for 2026 and didn't have an SSN or TIN on file.

Dear [first],

You are required by federal law to provide a Social Security number (SSN) or Taxpayer Identification number (TIN) to ��ñ�� for tax purposes.*

If you fail to do so, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) may impose a financial penalty of $50 (26 CFR 1.6050S-1(e)).

To resolve this issue, submit an SSN/TIN update form and a copy of your SSN or TIN card to the Office of the Registrar by mail or secure document upload by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2026.

*Federal Requirement

Section 6109 of the Internal Revenue Code requires you to provide your correct SSN or TIN so ��ñ�� can file Form 1098-T (Tuition Statement) with the IRS and provide a statement to you.

Get Ready to Register

Your assigned enrollment period begins at [time] on [date]. Registration remains open through open enrollment, which begins Jan. 4, 2027.

To make registration as easy as possible, complete these tasks ahead of time:

Add your enrollment dates to your calendar.
Work to resolve any registration holds by following instructions in the hold's description.
If you haven't already, schedule an advising appointment. If you're looking to improve your cumulative GPA, discuss whether you'd benefit from retaking a course for grade replacement.
If eligible, reserve a seat in a course. Course reservation starts Monday, Oct. 26, and ends at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30.
Complete preregistration.
Search for classes and add them to your shopping cart for faster registration. Learn more about how to search for classes.

Register for Classes

Register as soon as your enrollment time begins for the best chance to get the classes, class times and/or instruction modes you want. For step-by-step instructions, see our registration pages.

If a class you want is full, add yourself to the waitlist and set up drop if enrolled to automatically drop a backup class if you're enrolled from the waitlist.

Coming Back After Some Time Away?

Even if you're not taking classes this fall, you're still considered an active student if you've been gone for fewer than two semesters plus summer (undergrads), or if you took an official leave of absence (grad students).

Because we did not receive the required documentation by the applicable deadline, we are unable to complete review of your petition. Your petition for Fall 2026 has been closed and will not be processed further. Petition closures are final and may not be appealed.

If you believe you qualify for in-state tuition classification, you are welcome to submit a new petition for a future term. A new petition must be submitted within the published deadlines.

You have been approved for in-state tuition as an honorably discharged veteran. We’re reaching out with information about the potential financial benefits of also becoming a Colorado resident for tuition purposes.

Financial Benefits of Becoming a Resident

As an honorably discharged veteran, you’ll be assessed the in-state tuition rate through a military residency exception while attending ��ñ��.

However, if you are 22 years old or older, married or a graduate student, you can begin taking steps now to become eligible for in-state tuition as a full Colorado resident. Colorado undergraduates are considered for state and ��ñ�� grants, which could increase your financial aid offer next year.

Pursuing Colorado resident classification is optional and will not affect your eligibility for the in-state tuition rate under the veteran exception.

Your Next Steps to Petition for a Residency Change

Step 1: Submit Your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

If you do intend to become a Colorado resident and want to be considered for additional financial aid, submit your 2027–28 FAFSA and any requested documentation. The FAFSA will be available October 1 for the upcoming school year. Learn more about applying for aid.

Step 2: Take Action to Establish Colorado Domicile

Your 12-month physical presence period began when you moved to Colorado. To prove demonstrate your intent to make Colorado your one, true, fixed and permanent home, you must:

ObtainGet a Colorado driver’s license or ID card within 120 days of moving to the state.
Register your vehicle, (if you have one,) in Colorado within 180 days of moving to the state to avoid penalties.
Establish additional Colorado ties. Visit our adult residency page and watch the adult residency video to learnreview the full requirements.

Step 3: Submit a Residency Petition

Use our residency calendars to determine the first semester for which you'd qualify for in-state residency.

Once petitions open for that term, submit your residency petition with all required documentation to the Office of the Registrar by the posted deadline.

Happy National Voter Registration Day! Register to vote now to have your voice heard in the November election.

What You Need to Know

In-state students: All active, registered Colorado voters automatically receive a ballot in the mail a few weeks before Election Day. If you plan to vote in Boulder or in your home county, make sure you're registered to vote and that your ballot mailing address is up to date. Colorado voters may update their registration at anytime.
Out-of-state students: You may choose to either request an absentee ballot from your home state or register to vote in Boulder County. You cannot register and/or vote in both locations. Many states have a registration and/or absentee ballot request deadline, so act now to receive your ballot.

Note: If you register to vote in Colorado, you'll be considered a Colorado resident for motor vehicle registration, income tax, and jury duty purposes. Registering to vote does not automatically make you a resident for tuition purposes. Your ��ñ�� tuition classification won't change unless you take all of the necessary actions to establish residency and successfully petition for a change in residency.
Students living on campus: Whether voting in Colorado or in your home state via absentee ballot, you must use your mailbox number, not your dorm room number for your ballot to find you. Visit Boulder County's Student Voting Guidelines page for instructions.

In-Person Registration & Voting

Starting Oct. 26, you can visit the UMC Vote Center to register, update your registration and vote in person. Williams Village will also have a Vote Center Nov. 2 and 3. ID is required for in-person registration and voting. Both locations will have a 24-hour drop box.
