NSF-DARPA Request for Information: AI Forge Program – University Research Capabilities for AI Strategic Thrusts

Ìý

Purpose

The Research & Innovation Office (RIO) is preparing an institutional response to a federal Request for Information (RFI) regarding university capabilities supporting advanced artificial intelligence (AI) research. RIO is seeking information from campus stakeholders whose work aligns with the program's focus areas. Information collected through this process will be used to identify relevant expertise, capabilities, infrastructure, and past performance for inclusion in the university's coordinated response. Individual faculty submissions to the RFI are not allowed.Ìý

AI Forge will establish a forum – comprised of industry, university, and government participants – to identify, fund, and manage university-led research efforts aimed at challenges defined in the . The forum will be administered by a nonprofit.

Areas of Interest

The RFI seeks information related to university capabilities in the following strategic thrusts:

  • AI interpretability:ÌýResearch challenges focused on making the behavior, decisions and impacts of AI systems understandable to humans, with an objective to move beyond explanations in routine settings toward operational interpretability.
  • AI control:ÌýResearch challenges focused on pioneering tools that can provide strong, verifiable evidence of bounded, auditable and reliable model behavior today, while laying the essential groundwork for maintaining meaningful human control over future, more capable AI systems.
  • Adversarial robustness:ÌýResearch challenges focused on building the scientific foundations for AI that is not just capable, but resilient by design so that it maintains its integrity and intended performance even when under deliberate attack from a thinking adversary.

Faculty and research teams with expertise in one or more of these areas are encouraged to by June 16.

Deadlines

  • CU Internal Deadline: 11:59pm MT June 16, 2026

Information Requested

  • Relevant Role (e.g., PI, Research Scientist, Institute Director, Center Director, Other)
  • AI Strategic Thrust(s) your work supportsÌý
  • Research Achievements and Past Performance (250 words maximum)
    • Provide an overview of your research achievements demonstrating expertise in AI interpretability, AI control, and adversarial robustness (e.g., funded projects and sponsors; major publications or technical reports; key research accomplishments; and any directly associated industry, government, or Defense Industrial Base collaborations or technology transition outcomes such as SBIR/STTR participation, licensed IP, or deployment/transition of research results).
  • Facilities and Infrastructure (250 words maximum)
    • Describe the physical facilities, dedicated research resources, and data and computing infrastructure available to support fundamental research.

Selection and Use of Information

Submitted information will be reviewed by the institutional coordination team and may be incorporated into the university's consolidated RFI response. Submission of information does not guarantee inclusion in the final response; however, all submissions will be considered as part of the university's capability assessment.
