Romeo & Juliet directed by Heather Kelley

By William Shakespeare

Roe Green Theatre

February 19-28th, 2027

The Story:

A troupe of amateur actors—teenagers—break into a shuttered theatre to stage their own irreverent adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, which they plan to record and share via social media. The theatre is monitored by a security guard, who the teenagers elude in the prologue, but are forced to confront in the play’s final scene, coinciding with the theatrical entrance of the First Watch, the night watchman character in Romeo and Juliet. The actors extend a script to the security guard as an olive branch: will he receive it and become their ally, or report their trespassing to the authorities?Ìý

Setting: An abandoned theatre somewhere in the United States. Night.Ìý

AND: Verona and Mantua, Italy. Five days in early July. Eleven years since the earthquake.

Special Notes:

Please note that our rehearsal process will include four (4) days of table work on November 17-20, 2026 (from 6:00-10:00 PM) to give cast members the maximum time possible to familiarize themselves with Shakespeare’s language and begin to learn their lines. Cast members are encouraged to be off-book when rehearsals resume on January 11, 2027.

Audition Requirements:

Please prepare two (2) contrasting monologues: one (1) contemporary piece that feels close to you, and one (1) classical piece using heightened language. The combined performance time should be less than three (3) minutes.

Please list any unique skills or experience on your resume, including but not limited to stage combat, dance, musical instruments, singing, and/or puppetry.

Cast Breakdown:Ìý

All cast members will play at least two roles: a contemporary teenager, and the character(s) this teenager has taken on in their amateur production of Romeo and Juliet. Auditionees will be considered for all roles listed, regardless of gender identity indicated in the script.
